Thursday 18 February, 8pm - fundraising South African wine tasting

South Africa's wine industry and its people are being hard hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have teamed up with Waitrose to put together an online tasting of South African wines.

COVID-19 has affected all of us, but the impact on the people and the wine industry of South Africa has been especially harsh. Winemakers have been banned for much of the past year from selling their wines and many workers and their families find themselves in unexpected poverty. The ban has recently been lifted, but winemakers and the rural poor are still facing hardship.

Buying wines will help South African wine producers empty their tanks, in readiness for this year's wine harvest. Grapes are being picked right now, and winery tanks are still full of last year's wines.

It's a big issue, and you can help.
1. Drink South African wines and help producers empty their tanks.
2. Donate to Bruce Jack's charity, The Headstart Trust, a rural food relief charity, providing food and other support to families in the Cape . You can read more about the charity and its work here: https://brucejack.com/the-headstart-trust-rural-food-relief-update/

How this tasting works
This tasting is designed to help the South African wine industry in two ways: by buying their wines; and we will be donating all the profits from this event to The Headstart Trust, which is providing food relief.

1. You buy a ticket to the tasting via Eventbrite (the link is below, all the profits will go to The Headstart Trust).
2. Buy a specially selected and discounted case of 6 South African wines, available only from Waitrose Cellar for £55 - click here to order online from 8th February. The case includes one bottle each of: De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc, Kaapzicht Chenin Blanc, Rustenberg Chardonnay, Stellenrust Cinsault, Fairview Pinotage and Journey's End Cabernet Sauvignon. The discounted price of this case of 6 will be £55 (compared to just over £75 when all the wines are full price). Or buy one or more of the bottles instore (discount won't apply).
3. Tell your friends!
4. We taste the wines together on the evening of Thursday 18th February!

We'll be joined on the evening by Murray Barlow, cellarmaster at Rustenberg.

Friday 26 February, 8pm - fundraising South African wine tasting
Due to demand, we have added a second date of our SA wine tasting. This is the same event as the 18 February one, tasting the same wines.

We will be joined on the evening by Stellenrust winemaker Tertius Boshoff.

Friday 5 March - Cider is Wine tasting

Love Wine...love these ciders
A tutored tasting that will change perceptions! There’s a real difference in taste between mass market ciders and those made exclusively from 100% juice content, without using any concentrates.

Discover for yourself with our on-line tasting of a selection of ciders redolent of terroir – the locality, the varieties used, the vintage and the skill and passion of the maker… just as with wine. Richard Bampfield MW and Heather Dougherty will be joined by Alistair Morrell of Cider is Wine to guide you through the tasting.

No added water, artificial sweeteners or flavourings – in fact these ciders follow EU – and globally-accepted – winemaking regulations. This is very different from the UK mass market cider industry which allows 35% juice content, all of which can be from concentrate.

Buy your £10 (plus Eventbrite booking fee) ticket via Eventbrite (link is below) here to get access to the event on Zoom, then order your specially discounted case of 4 delicious ciders directly from Cider is Wine.

The ciders we will taste are:
  • Tinston Anatomy 2017 Brut (sparkling) 750ml
  • Once Upon A Tree Co-ferment Bacchus 2018 (still, dry) 750ml
  • Long Brothers Apple and Blueberry 2018 (lightly sparkling, medium dry) 750ml
  • Brännland Claim Iscider 2018 (dessert sweetness) 375ml

Once you've bought your Eventbrite ticket, click
here to buy these ciders at a very special discounted price of £45, including delivery to a mainland UK address. Make sure you use the code LW10 at the Cider is Wine checkout to get free delivery.

Ticket sales end at midday on Sunday 28th February, to make sure there's time to get the ciders to you in time for the tasting.
As always, you must be over 18 to join any of our tastings.
